- Who: Amy Seitz

- Interesting Stats: Sold 500 Courses for Ohio in 2022
Who are you and what course have you created?
Ohio Notary Public Course, Ohio Notary Public Renewal Course, and the Montana Remote Masterclass for Notaries. We will soon release the Remote Online Notary Masterclass.
What market does your online course serve?
We provide state-required training for new notaries or current notaries to maintain their Notary Public commission.
What’s the biggest benefit of taking your course?
It is required by law to obtain these classes to become, or remain a Notary Public. So people need to take them to get into this professional field.
How did you get into the market?
I’m a 20+ year Notary and recently opened a software package that allows for Virtual Notarization of documents. During this transition in my focus, I found many notaries struggling because the teaching method that was already in place – wasn’t cutting it with actual real work experience.
Why did you decide to create an online course in the first place?
I was already doing online training for notaries on our software system, so I knew I didn’t want to do an in-person training program. Plus, doing it in person means renting a space and other overhead charges limiting training classes’ return on investment.
Did you have any moments of doubt before you created/launched it?
No … I knew there was a demand for this program.
What’s your online course like?
We have video lessons that the student must watch in full before they can move to the following video. They cannot “fast forward” through any of it.
Some programs have drag-and-drop word quizzes, some have multiple choice quizzes, and some have a crossword puzzle for vocabulary word quizzes 😊 . It keeps people engaged.
How long did it take you to create your course?
It actually takes quite a while to develop each lesson. I am creating a new course, and one lesson is only 12 mins long. However, for a 12-minute lesson, it takes about 5 hours to create the graphics, add the voice overlay, and then integrate the timing of the slides. And that’s just for one lesson!
Tell us a little about the process of launching your course and getting your first sale(s).
I had to get my training approved by the State of Ohio and the State of Montana. So that meant I had to have the entire course completed, the Notary Division attended the course, and then offered feedback for the corrections they wanted to see. Once updated, they reviewed the course again to ensure the changes were made. After that, approval was granted.
Do you have a lead magnet?
I do not, as we are legally limited on what we can sell the course for.
What’s the traffic strategy that works best for you?
I find posting on social media works the best, but I do it a bit differently than most!
What online course platform are you using?
I use LearnDash with the H5p plug-in functions.
Do you like it?
It works well (once you learn all the shortcodes and hacks). It has the best pricing compared to the other programs and still does the job.
Are there any features you wish it had?
I wish it were a smoother process for the client to access the course. They seem to get stuck in their account and can’t simply access current courses.
What made you decide to use your chosen platform over others?
Price 😊 I saw some others that would be fancier and maybe easier for me, but this program was the best for the least amount of investment 😊
What other tools do you use to run your online course business?
Nothing else 😊. I am all set just with this.
Do you have any big mistakes you’ve made along the way that you’d be willing to share?
At first, I didn’t use a streamlined video presentation for classes, and you could hear audio from inside my home office (outside noise/filters not working).
Please share some idea of revenue.
I don’t want to give all my revenue details, but I did sell 500 courses for just Ohio last year. - Amy Seitz Click To TweetPlease tell us a little about what the money you’ve earned from your course has done for you.
It helped with many things, including covering part of the costs for my online notarization company improvements.
What has creating your course done for you personally?
It has helped make me aware that I have a voice and can help others become better at what they want to achieve.
